Hi!

I’m guessing if you clicked on this post, chances are you’re interested in — or at least exploring the possibility of — a job in PR. Let me be the first to say: great idea!

Although it’s not always like an episode of Emily in Paris, it can, at times, come pretty close. PR is an exciting and fast-paced field where no two days are ever alike. Professionals in this industry are privileged to work with some of today’s most buzzworthy brands to build excitement with the public about everything they have to offer.

It’s a career that relies heavily on creativity, communication and teamwork. And if you ask me, it’s one of the most rewarding jobs you can have.

Tips for Landing Your Dream Job in PR

As the HR Generalist for 1Milk2Sugars, I play an active role in our agency’s hiring and onboarding process. This experience has provided me with some key insights into what it takes to land your dream job in this field.

Below are some of my go-to tips for giving your hiring chances in PR and digital marketing that extra boost:
  • Find a Company That Aligns With Your Values and Goals: Like most businesses, PR agencies have unique value propositions that set them apart. Before applying, do your research to make sure the firm’s principles and goals align with yours. Does the agency work with clients you admire? Are you aligned with their CSR? Does the company culture and work schedule fit with your lifestyle? These are valuable questions to ask yourself at the outset of your job hunt to ensure it’s a good match for everyone involved.
  • Find the Right Position Within the Company: Finding your dream PR job starts with making sure your skills and expectations line up with the role you’re applying to. Are you a strong writer and a strategic thinker? Do you excel at multitasking and managing multiple projects? Have you had experience and success working with the media? Once you’ve found an agency that fits your goals, zeroing in on the right position will help improve your hiring chances. And overall success as part of the team.
  • Get Creative With Your Application: PR is a creative field, so show you’ve got what it takes from the get go! In addition to the standard resume, a creative application (think: a cover letter that reads like a pitch. Or an Instagram Reel of why you are fit for the job for example) will set you apart from the competition. Remember, authenticity goes a long way! Whatever you do, don’t forget about copywriting and grammar! PR is a content-driven field and prospective employers will want to see that you have impeccable attention to detail right off the bat.
  • Learn to Make Impactful Presentations: We live in a visual world and that goes double for our industry. Creating engaging and memorable presentations is key to making a strong first impression with prospective clients. It shows them what you can do and how you’ll put those creative skills to work for them. Canva is a gift to our industry that makes video and graphic design easier than ever. I recommend making it your new BFF and including it on your resume as a special skill.

I know what you’re thinking: there’s got to be more to it than that! And you’d be right. This isn’t an exhaustive list but rather a starting point if you’re looking to make the leap into the world of PR.

One thing is for certain, you won’t regret taking a chance on this exciting and fast-paced career. And who knows? Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to cross paths someday soon…
